Public education in the state of Florida is in crisis right now, and it's hitting close to home. The Sarasota County School Board has decided to lay off 180 teachers and another 79 classified staff positions, such as custodians, food service workers and IT professionals for the next school year as the district faces a $45 million shortfall due to the state's voucher program. Vouchers enable parents to get the money the state pays school districts per student to be used for private or home schooling. Over 4,800 SCSD students are expected to be participating in the voucher program. As part of the layoffs, all first year teachers face being terminated. This comes on top of staff reductions last school year and following two years of a hiring freeze for educators in the district Further exacerbating the problem is the state's "schools of hope" program that allow private, for-profit school operators to open up shop in "underutilized" schools, even co-locating in operating ones, while saddling the school districts for all costs including free rent, transportation, maintenance and food services. These schools then become a double-whammy for the public school districts as they not only lose the student revenue but must shoulder 100% of the costs for private operators in their buildings. Our schools in this state, and right here in Sarasota County, are in a crisis created by the state's making. My heart goes out to my fellow educators in this district and those across the state who are similarly affected. If you are a parent of school age children, this should concern you as well. Please contact your state representatives and local school board and let your voice be heard. https://www.mysuncoast.com/2026/04/03/sarasota-county-schools-cut-teachers-vouchers-divert-millions-district/ submitted by /u/Uberubu65 [link] [comments]
