I’m a parent and looking for advice. I’m scared and freaking out. My son is approaching the end of 2nd grade at a private school. He’s dyslexic and getting private tutoring for that, pull outs at school, and 1:1 work with me at home for literacy and math. I recognized he is struggling in math at the beginning of this school year. So we started RightStart Math Level A (kindergarten) about 5-6 months ago. This is designed for dyslexic children. We are almost done with this level. My intention is to do one level every 6 months (including summer). So after 5 months of 1:1 math work, I’m addition to all the regular schooling, he still does not know 10-9=1 without calculating on his fingers. Same with 20-19 and 9-8 and 8-7, etc. There are other glaring holes in his number sense. For instance, he still struggles with time. He can read a digital clock but has no idea what it means - that from 9:00 to 10:00 is one hour, for instance. He has no concept of how long 1 hour really is. Or 5 minutes. He wears a watch. I don’t know what to do. It already seems like I’m doing all I can short of quitting my job and home schooling him (that’s not an option). The teachers are not to blame. I feel it’s my child’s aptitude. What should I do? I don’t want him to be a genius. Just grade-level. Thank you for any advice. EDIT: I’m a dad not a mom, in case that matters. submitted by /u/UnrulyAnteater25 [link] [comments]
