What do you all do about the kids that don't follow directions? One of my students refused to put a paper in her backpack because "I don't feel like it." She got a 100 on the paper so it can't be the grade. Everyone else followed my directions no problem. Eventually she put it in there because the person that comes to give her scheduled breaks said that she wasn't going to get snack if she didn't follow directions. She is a kid that just won't do something if she doesn't want to. Admin and her case manager have said that I should probably stop fighting it and just let her draw or read if she doesn't want to do work, then she will earn 50% in the gradebook. But even when I tell her simple directions like to walk fast and catch up with our line (because she's so slow and has to be at the end of the line) she just keeps going slow. She's on the spectrum and has an IEP. She has a daily sheet where she gets candy at the end of the day if she earns all her points. I tell her she can read or draw When she's done with work but even if I preemptively take her book or drawing she will just get another book or draw on whatever paper is available. I don't want to give up on her because she is very capable of doing the work and following directions. She shows that she knows the material when she likes it and pays attention. She was not found eligible for gifted services. But I've got lots of needy kids and can't sit with her the whole time. Admin doesn't give her any consequences for not following directions. They will only give her a consequence when we have to clear the classroom because of her. she had a good couple weeks where she was consistently following directions and doing her work, but she got suspended last Friday for getting in another student's face and trashing my room. now she's been grumpy all week because she thinks the other kids got her in trouble and she has to be in the same room as him still. submitted by /u/sugarzebracakes [link] [comments]
