I teach at a small, rural middle school (about 200 students). So, my principal asked me today if I’d be willing to take a student teacher for the last few weeks of the school year. She said that I would be his 3rd mentor teacher this semester because the first two requested he not come back. When I asked why, they said that the first two were more “traditional” in their teaching (lecture, notes type classes) while the student teacher wanted to try more interactive and hands-on lessons so they think I’d be a better fit (I make unit canva presentations and do a mixture of notes and hands on activities but rarely just stand up front and lecture). She said she’d respect my no if I didn’t want to. I’m only in my 6th year of teaching and honestly feel like I’m making things up on the daily. I’m really not sure I’m qualified to be teaching anyone how to teach. The other thing my principal did point out is the other 7th grade social studies position has been vacant all school year so I lost one of my planning periods and my classes are HUGE this year since I have the entire year (we also couldn’t get a long term sub, but I agreed to take them for the year for a raise and an exemption from after school activities this year). So it could be a help for the rest of the year to have another adult in the room. What are yalls thoughts? submitted by /u/9baelfyr5 [link] [comments]
