Now, that's already in the past. I'm a teacher in training and completed my final internship in a 5th grade. There was a girl who had a pretty difficult home life (lived in an orphanage from monday-friday, weekends with parents). For some reason, she refused to do pretty much all the work. She never put up an aggressive fight, she claimed she doesn't understand or doesn't know. I've tried everything from reducing her work, setting smaller goals, to giving her other work to giving her an extra lesson in math (which she was grateful for). My methods of teaching were vastly different from their main teacher's methods. My lessons involve very short instructions, lots of games and work that's as creative and interest oriented as possible. Yet she mostly didn't engage. The thing is, I'm convinced she doesn't do this with malice and honestly, I think she might be depressed. I've noticed how she barely enjoys anything, even more so if it's school related. I also believe she has very low self-esteem. No matter what the task was, she claimed she didn't know how to do it. Even with examples I gave her, she didn't know what to do. We did lots of drawings, rhythms, poetry, all things where I specifically told the students they can't do anything wrong, as long as what they are doing is respectful. That was the only rule with these types of tasks. Nothing worked. I asked her how she studies, what her favorite subjects are, what her interests are, nothing came of that really. The only thing she really did with passion was an interest oriented presentation, despite having the chance for interest oriented tasks in most of my subjects. As I did with all students, I tried to build her confidence. Pointing out what she did well, noticing when she was wearing something nice and so on. When I asked their main teacher about her, the answer I got was "well, that's who she is and then she cries about bad graded." Not hapoy woth that tbh.
