I have been a 7th-grade social studies teacher at the worst Title I school in my area. I came through the alternative certification route and am also the JV head coach for basketball at another school in a much better district (basketball job came before the teaching job, and the school I coach at had no openings). Anyway, you can view my previous posts about my recent struggles with admin and teaching on the inclusion team with no support, training, or co-teacher. All of this, plus the extra hours outside of the workday and emotional stress, is making me consider leaving while it's still early in my career/life (I'm 25). The big problem I'm dealing with is the basketball piece. I LOVE coaching basketball. It gives me so much joy and fulfillment and has never felt like work. Basketball has been my sanctuary since I was a teenager, and I cannot imagine a life without it. So, my problem is: if I want to be a varsity head coach (I do), then I also need to teach at the school. Should I try to stick with teaching at a different school? Is there any way I can continue to coach basketball or be involved with basketball if I want to move out of education? Does anyone have experience with a situation like this? submitted by /u/Imaginary_Feed1979 [link] [comments]
