There’s a controversial video going around showing a student in Philadelphia interviewing high school seniors who struggle to read aloud. He asks them to read a short passage, and several have difficulty getting through it or can’t read it at all. When he asks them to explain what they read, there’s little to no comprehension. I’m linking one version below. There are a lot of reposts, but I chose this one because it blurs the students’ faces since these are still kids. It does have some cheesy music, but here it is: Philadelphia seniors struggling to read aloud on camera The student who posted this is getting a lot of attention, and the reactions are pretty much what you would expect. A lot of blame is being directed at teachers, and to be fair, some of that criticism is not completely unwarranted. There are definitely cases where students were failed along the way. But what frustrates me is how little attention gets paid to the larger systems that allow this to happen. Most of us in education know this is not an isolated issue. Where is the accountability for policies, funding decisions, and state-level leadership that not only allow situations like this, but in some cases actively perpetuate them? submitted by /u/AniTeach [link] [comments]
