I took over a seventh-grade job for the rest of the year that includes an introductory CS elective. The class only has five girls out of 20+ total students. The project I was given to assign during the transition/adjustment period was to research a famous computer scientist and make a poster - sort of a 2-for-1 of graphic design and history. I gave the students some example people they could choose since computer scientists aren’t exactly household names - I threw Margaret Hamilton, Grace Hopper, and Ada Lovelace on the list to fill it out and because they’re worth knowing about. The girls immediately gravitated towards those names and chose Lovelace to research, saying they wanted to do their project on a girl. One other girl even independently chose Hedy Lamarr, whom I had forgotten to put on the list. It was a challenging first day at the school with a lot of behaviours, but that small moment made my entire day. submitted by /u/the_gaymer_girl [link] [comments]
