I am a hs teacher - 3 years in my current school but 18 years in education. I advise a CTSO where student compete in various events and have a very large chapter. I have had 7 trips with no issues, until this years state competition which was 2 nights at a hotel. It was just a bad mix of kids this year and we had a group of 20 students who were just an absolute mess. We had to call an emergency meeting with our whole group to discuss behavior, I had to pull the group aside and they were also pulled aside by the state adviser of the conference for inappropriate behavior. It was bad enough that they told us if we had one more issue they would disqualify the whole school. We had our head of security on the trip and he reprimanded many of the students and when we returned to school I gave the VP a list of students who needed to be spoken to. The result was students being dismissed from the club and if they qualified for nationals they are not allowed to go. The main statement was if you can't follow directions for 2 days, theres no way I trust that student on a trip for 7 days out of state. I guess in speaking with the students, the vp made a statement along the lines of "any other issues you can take it up with Ms. Caprese Salad" so my inbox is now full with these kids either A)trying desperately to apologize to save their nationals seat or B) Trying to explain in 8 million ways why they aren't at fault, wrong place wrong time, and one of the best was "I was bad because you put me in a room with bad kids". Nationals is a week in JULY that I am not compensated extra for so there is no way I am taking anyone who even puts a toe out of line. I frankly am over it. They had plenty of time to fix behavior on the trip. I have given my time to this club above and beyond and I only have 1 42 min prep a day, I am not giving any more of my time to this. I am also hearing these boys are harassing the officers of the club trying to get me to change my mind. I am planning to quit being the adviser as soon as I sign my contract for next year, it takes an absolutely astronomical amount of time, I am paid $700 a year and the kids aren't greatful. So do I owe these kids requesting a meeting a meeting? Or just an email back saying decisions have been made and the decision by the VP stands? submitted by /u/capresesalad1985 [link] [comments]
