In a major development for millions of Americans, the U.S. Department of Education is set to wipe out significant portions of student loan debt for approximately 164,000 borrowers. The move marks a significant step towards fulfilling the Biden administration's promise to provide relief to those struggling with federal student loan debt. According to officials, these borrowers will be automatically eligible for loan forgiveness due to their enrollment in certain income-driven repayment plans, which have been deemed eligible for forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. The loan forgiveness is expected to provide much-needed financial relief to individuals who have dedicated their careers to public service, including teachers, healthcare workers, and non-profit professionals.
Today, about 164,000 federal student loan borrowers are being notified that they are eligible for automatic loan forgiveness.
