My wife teaches honors sophomore American literature and is doing a unit centered on The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien. Summative assessment and theme focus is specifically trauma and coping mechanisms. She has a student who cannot read any graphic material, so she’s looking for an alternative. He is very smart, so she doesn’t want any watered down middle grade version. Open to other types of trauma as the focus and leaving any sort of war out of it.
