They say never bring up the trauma of your previous job and don’t sound desperate in an interview. After being laid off last school year and not being able to find a job in my content area, I am extremely energized and ready to get back into the classroom. I’ve done a lot of reflecting and self-growth over the past 12 months and I realize that, although I interviewed last cycle, I wasn’t emotionally ready to interview. I think that I wasn’t ready for a multitude of reasons, but primarily because all my interviews last cycle would start off with some variation of “What brings you to this _____ School?”. And, last cycle, I was so emotionally devastated that I focused my answer on my job loss and my desperation for a full time job. Obviously, I am in a better headspace now and I want to strike the balance between my passion for this field, but also honesty about my situation since it is clear on my resume (full time teacher for 7 years, then building sub for the last school year). However, I don’t want to get bogged down in the emotions of a situation that still hurts me in some respects (lesser, but still does hurt me). So, how would you phrase this in an interview?
