I’m in the middle of a staff book study on “The Anxious Generation” by Jonathan Haidt…all wonderful ideas about more phone-free, more-play environments. However, I think we’ve found some great solutions for the K-8 world…but what about older students? I’m in a suburban/rural 9–12 setting, but I started out at our district’s diploma options/“Alternative” school. I’m getting flashbacks to times when I would have to read text aloud to an 11th grader, and think “yeah, some of the reforms coming out are sounding great…for younger students…what do we do with the kids that have reached HS without basic supports”? I like Haidt’s ideas, but what has anyone seen work at the HS level? How do we go back and alleviate the previous 9-10 years of anxiety/phone addiction/general dislike of school/etc? IS there such a thing out there to triage the older students and their issues? submitted by /u/Shandi_Meisner [link] [comments]
