A new report from the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association (NLTA) warns that the province’s K‑12 schools face a “major” crisis in hiring and keeping teachers. The study cites a sharp rise in vacancies, especially in rural districts, and highlights low pay, high workload, and limited professional development as key factors driving educators to leave or avoid the profession. NLTA officials are urging the government to increase salaries, offer loan‑repayment programs, and create clearer career pathways to reverse the trend. The findings come amid growing concerns that teacher shortages could compromise student learning outcomes across the province.
