Thousands of U.S. public-school employees have received layoff warnings as the nation’s education system grapples with mounting financial pressures. Here are the key statistics from the article Several large school districts across the United States are reducing staff because of budget pressures and declining student enrollment. In Los Angeles, approximately 660 positions are being eliminated. The Clark County School District in Nevada is cutting around 700 positions while serving about 288,000 students, which is roughly 37,000 fewer students than it had at its peak enrollment. In Cleveland, about 400 employees are expected to lose their jobs, and 29 of the district’s 93 schools are being closed or consolidated. Cleveland’s enrollment has declined by about 50% over the past two decades and now stands at roughly 34,000 students. Nationwide, public school enrollment dropped by about 1.2 million students (2%) between 2020 and 2022, and projections suggest another 5% decline by 2031, which would amount to approximately 2.7 million additional students. Other districts reporting similar financial challenges include Chicago, Houston, Boston, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, and several Florida districts.
