After 17 years teaching in Alabama, a seasoned technology‑support teacher has repeatedly been passed over for administrative roles, despite strong recommendations and a leadership degree earned in 2016. The district’s new Principal Visionary Program now selects principals internally, and the applicant’s recent rejection has raised questions about the criteria and fairness of the process. With a background in educational technology and a solid teaching record, she feels her expertise is undervalued while her peers advance, prompting frustration over the lack of interview opportunities and unclear promotion pathways.
Hi all, I am in need of some advise. This is my 17th year in education in the state of Alabama. I went back to school in 2016, to get my Leadership Degree to become a principal. At that time I was asked to go get it because my principal was retiring and was coming to recommend me for the job. Well, the retiring superintendent had other plans and granted some favors as she left out the door And I was passed over. I did leave the district briefly to work in higher education because I always wanted to work in educational technology. in my district, I never that job would never come open. I learned a lot during that time and still use the methodology I learned in course design in my Schoology courses today. Our district mainly promotes coaches and it seems lately to be fraternity or sorority individuals (for which I am not a member). Currently, the district is currently getting administrators is through their own Principal Visionary Program. You have to be chosen to attend by the district. Some of these new APs did not go through it and was told they had priority first. Today, I was rejected again for the cohort. I honestly have no idea how to become an AP in my district (my principal wrote a great recommendation). The part the bothers me the most is some of these district administrators now I worked with them when they were teachers and Asst. Principals fixing their work and personal technology items and I cannot seem to land an interview. My background is technology heavily being a Technology Support Teacher (TST) for all of my years in K-12 education. Most admins have no idea about technology I try to use that as my leverage since I am not a coach. Salary wise since I am a high need science/computer science teacher I make roughly the same as an AP but on a 9 month contract. Part of me says I have it made the other half says I am not deserving of a promotion which I guess is bothering me more than ever. My teacher reviews have always been good to average and I try to keep my students busy with project based learning activities. I have seriously considered leaving education all together this year. After 14 years of high school in rural and inner city I am so tired and considered a municipal job where things are slower and I can still retire at 25 years.
