Portland Public Schools has introduced Maine’s first locally developed K-12 Black history curriculum, designed to integrate foundational lessons on African American contributions into the district’s core academic programs. The initiative aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of Black history and culture, addressing gaps in traditional state-mandated education standards. Developed in collaboration with educators and community leaders, the curriculum covers key themes from early African civilizations to modern civil rights movements and beyond. With Maine’s existing state standards offering limited coverage of Black history, this program marks a significant step toward inclusive education in the region.
