Background: I teach high school and middle school French, and I'm the only French teacher in both buildings. This means that I have 6 preps, and I'm required to travel every day between two buildings. To make matters worse, our latest admin has made many changes in our high school building, leaving me without a dedicated classroom. So I have to carry basically everything I need for each class each day. Here's the issue: I was told on Monday that I have to have a partial hysterectomy. During that appointment, the doctor told me he had an appointment available mid-June. I said yes, let's schedule that bc I need it to happen during the summer. Recovery time is a minimum of 2 weeks, and I wouldn't be allowed to lift anything (like my backpack) over 10 lbs. during the recovery period. Two days later (today) the scheduling office called and said the doc made a mistake, and that his first available appointment wouldn't be until mid-August..only 5 days before the start of the school year. I explained to the scheduling nurse that I'm a teacher, and I really need to get an appointment during the summer, and she asked "Well, can't you just get a substitute to teach your classes?" I know it's not her job to understand, but seriously NO sub wants to pick up my absences bc my schedule is so horrific. And on top of that, sub plans for 6 different preps is an absolute nightmare. When I mentioned to the nurse that I'd have to carry a heavy backpack from class to class, she told me she had the procedure done herself, and it's really not a big deal, and that I'd be able to handle it. I'm just so frustrated that no one ever really gets how difficult it is just to take time off from work, and I feel like the nurse's responses to my concerns were just so condescending. Rant over.
