Detroit Public Schools Community District is expanding an attendance incentive that officials say helped improve turnout among high school students. Students in grades 6 through 8 can earn $50 for each week of perfect attendance, while high school students can still earn $100 a week. The expansion comes as chronic absenteeism remains widespread. In 2024-25, 61% of district students missed at least 10% of the school year. There will also be a new ride-share pilot program. The $500,000 rideshare pilot will provide trips to about 150 students at Pershing, Denby, Osborn and East English Village high schools from Aug. 24 through mid-October. A separate $1 million state grant will keep DDOT bus rides free for all Detroit K-12 students. https://themetrodetroitnews.com/detroit-schools-to-continue-100-weekly-perfect-attendance-payments-add-50-for-middle-schoolers/ * * I wish that this existed when I was in school! My parents actually gave a damn so I definitely would’ve got money weekly. However, I don’t like the idea of bribing kids and teens to attend something that’s beneficial to them when they should just be rewarded with an education, and a free one at that. If anything, if they must do this, at least do it for good grades. I can see any other students going for this to tackle the problem especially at title one schools. If a family has multiple children in the same school district, it can help out with bills at home so more parents will be incentivized to get their kids to school. submitted by /u/OlliexAngel [link] [comments]
