The Situation: I’m a veteran teacher in a "sinking ship" school with toxic leadership. The Principal and her coaches are idiots. Every meeting is a waste of time. People constantly transfer out every year. The upside? I’ve mastered "flying under the radar." I work 8-2 with zero expectations from admin because they’re too busy with their own chaos. My grade level team is great and we’re close, but the turnover is so high that I’m not sure how long we’ll be together. But I’m cool with everyone and for the first time in a few schools, I feel like I’ve found a home (socially). The Opportunity: A nearby school with a very supportive Principal and a solid reputation wants me to apply. It would be a more "professional" environment, but I’d likely lose my "stealth mode" and, friendships and the instant collaboration I have now. The Dilemma: Do I stay where I can "phone it in" or move to a place where admin is caring and competent but I might have more "official" eyes on me so I’ll have to work way harder. TL;DR: Toxic school allows for 8-2 stealth mode/coworker bonding. Healthy school offers better admin but more structure.
