"Mathematical Mismatch: Professors Baffled by Incoming Students' Lack of Basic Math Skills A growing concern is emerging in the academic community as professors report that many incoming students are struggling with middle school-level math concepts. This trend has left educators stunned, raising questions about the effectiveness of high school mathematics education and the standards for college admission. Despite the importance of basic math skills in everyday life and future academic pursuits, it appears that many students are entering college without a solid foundation in arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. As one professor noted, this lack of proficiency is making it increasingly difficult to teach more advanced math concepts, putting students at a disadvantage in their academic careers."

Link: https://futurism.com/future-society/professors-incoming-students-dont-understand-math I'm just a student, but this is genuinely insane to me that professors are having to teach MIDDLE SCHOOL math. Are there no standards for college admission anymore? How are these students graduating high school? I understand it can be inequitable, but we seriously need to go back to serious standards in my opinion. Everyone should have to get a decent SAT score or something to go to university. At the end of the day, regardless of your race or anything else, you need to meet basic high school standards to move on to college. submitted by /u/AaronPK123 [link] [comments]
