https://nypost.com/2026/08/16/us-news/uc-berkeley-math-prof-forced-to-teach-fractions-because-standards-have-fallen-so-far/ I am a recent UC Berkeley graduate who took some time between graduating and deciding on my career to substitute for a bit. First of all, mad respect to all you teachers out there. I wholly believe everyone should teach, even for just a day, because it was an eye-opening experience. What does everyone think about this? Personally, I am all for it. I was deeply frightened when I worked as a sub and witnessed the education kids are receiving. **At no fault of teachers by the way!!** I cannot believe how different it is from when I was in school (I graduated high school in 2022). I am fearful of how little these students think for themselves and how little they care. How can we make a change? I believe schools (especially elementary) need to be almost screen free, standards need to be raised, some curriculum needs to be changed (because why are we using squares to represent everything in math? I have never drawn so many squares in my life and been so confused. I did not use all these squares in school and turned out just fine), and above all else, students need to be held back. Of course, there are things (many things) parents need to do, but if kids were held back maybe that would push parents a bit. submitted by /u/Mountain_Excellent [link] [comments]
