I work at a college prep hs and recently some data came out that a good portion of our graduates just don't make it in college. It's interesting because the district came to us and said we need to push up the rigor and assign homework regularly and make sure that they get "true experiences that mimic what they'll see in college. This includes rigorous and challenging assignments and not just busy work" as if it's our fault that our kids aren't ready for higher education. And just a few weeks ago they asked us to consider submitting grade change forms so that some students could turn in extremely late work. It's so ridiculous because it's like they want to have the best of both worlds; they want us to boast about this "world class education," but at the same time when a number of kids don't do the work, we're expected to lower the goal post to make sure grades don't drop. One time I was told by an administrator (thank God they're no longer here) that if a student is failing a class then it is our fault if we didn't go above and beyond to help them pass. Maybe it's just me and I'm feeling cantankerous right now but you can't have a rigorous education and keep lowering standards to avoid grades looking bad. submitted by /u/SonnetFox [link] [comments]
